I have always been one of those teenagers living in New Mexico who says: “New Mexico is so boring, there is nothing to do here.” I always thought there was a lack of passion and inspiration in my life and that all had to do with my location. After reflecting long and hard I have realized that I have had one great activity to do all my life; right here in New Mexico. That activity is baseball. When I was four my parents placed me in T-ball, at that time I did not know what I was doing or how much of an impact it would have on my life.
Through baseball I have created many great memories, met influential people, and won some special awards. After speculation and refueling my love for the game I have realized it is my favorite sport, favorite pastime, and my entire life. Baseball has taught me things that I never would have learned otherwise. The game has taught me vital life lessons, on and off the field. It has gifted me hard work, dedication, patience, strength, endurance, and love. When I lost myself it taught me how to be me again.
When I was sick it made me well again. When I was unhappy and unloved I kept playing because I knew my team had my back no matter what. Playing baseball was always a reason to stay even when I was feeling low. Many years have passed since I first started playing and I can honestly say that it is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Because I live in an area that does not have many amusement parks, shopping districts, and urban living I have had to find other ways to entertain myself.
I am thankful for the opportunity to play this sport and I hope that everyone can find the same passion in something that they do. I am not saying that everyone should go out and play baseball because I know that it is not everyone’s cup of tea; I am saying that no matter where you live you can find the greatest things to kill your boredom. So, teenagers of New Mexico (and around the world) go out and find that thing that fills you with love and inspiration. It is not that far away.
